How big is One

How big is One As a man walked a desolate beach one cold, gray morning he began to see another figure, far in the distance. Slowly the two approached each other, and he could make out a local native who kept leaning down, picking something up and throwing it out into the water. Time and again he hurled things into the ocean. As the distance between them continued to narrow, the man could see that the native was picking up starfish that had been washed upon the beach and, one at a time, was throwing them back into the water.Puzzled, the man approached the native and asked what he was doing. Im throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You see, its low tide right now and all of these starfish have been washed up onto the shore. If I dont throw them back into the sea, theyll die up here from lack of oxygen. But there must be thousands of starfish on this beach, the man replied. You cant possibly get to all of them. There are just too many. And this same thing is probably happening on hundreds of be aches all up and down this coast. Cant you see that you cant possibly make a difference? The local native smiled, bent down and picked up another starfish, and as he threw it back into the sea he replied, Made a difference to that one!Author UnknownEach of us is but one person: limited, burdened with our own cares and responsibilities. We may feel there is so much to be done, and we have so little to give. Were usually short of everything, especially time and money. When we leave this shore, there will still be millions of starfish stranded on the beach. Maybe we cant change the whole world, but there isnt one of us who cant help change one persons whole world. One at a time. We can make a difference.

How to Write Illegal Immigration Essay

Immigration has always been a painful issue, and in light of the recent U.S. events, it is becoming even more urgent. The Syrian refugees, the travel ban imposed by the Trump administration, the aggravation of racism-based attacks – all of these make immigration an unavoidable topic of discussion and, in case of college students, academic writing. You are quite likely to be assigned to write an essay about illegal immigration, and if you have, you should make efforts to approach it right. Key difficulties when writing an illegal immigration essay To better prepare for writing the paper, you should first understand what you are getting yourself into. Immigration is a rather widely discussed topic, so writing it will unavoidably be connected with some major difficulties. Opposing points of view As with almost anything in politics, you can’t really stay in the middle and prevent yourself from taking any side. The experience proves that people can’t tolerate political views opposed to their own – at least, in most cases. That’s why by writing this essay you should be extremely careful in order not to offend the feelings of your readers. Even the most unbiased of professors might start taking your arguments with a grain of salt if you go against what they believe to be right. A diverse issue that requires research You can’t be just for or against immigration, because there are so many aspects to it. If it was simple, the debate surrounding it would not be so heated. If you are proposing something in your essay about illegal immigration, you will have to do extensive research about the appropriate legislation and practices. Any surface assumptions will not be taken seriously, that’s for sure. Prepare yourself for some digging. The danger of losing the human touch In distancing yourself from the problem of people who are immigrating illegally, you run the risk of losing what it takes to solve the issue effectively – the human touch. It’s easy to just close borders and forbid any kind of immigration, excepting a few selected people every year. But there are reasons why people choose to abandon their homes and live illegally in another country. There are wars and political oppression, for example. What are refuges – should they be considered legal or illegal immigrants? There are so many sides of the immigration issue itself, that you could never use the one-size-fits-all approach. Angles to consider If you haven’t been assigned a question to answer in your illegal immigration essay, then you will have to come up with an angle on your own. Being a diverse issue, illegal immigration offers plenty of opportunities. The â€Å"for and against† kind of paper will be too general and thus won’t offer any actionable measures. Here are but a few of the more specific angles you could use in your paper: Legislation The legislation area is admittedly rather wide, but it doesn’t mean you can’t focus on a legal act or two. You can analyze it and then propose ways to improve it to better reflect the modern realities of illegal immigration. Please note that in this approach, you will have to take into account international legislation as well, not only the U.S. laws. The Dreamers Dreamers are youth that have grown up in the U.S., having been brought to the country by their parents. Strictly speaking, they are illegal immigrants. In reality, however, they haven’t known any other home country beside the U.S. That’s why deporting them is a cruel measure. Up until recently, such people were protected by the Dreamers Act, which let them get education and then employment on legal grounds. The Trump administration, however, revoked the Act, affecting thousands of students all over the U.S., provoking outrage in academic circles. The very phenomenon of a person who has been brought to the country illegally but grew up as a full-fledged citizen is one worth studying. The Trump Wall Nobody expected the wall project to be a real one, and yet Mr. President is making it happen. What are the implications of erecting such a structure on the U.S. border? Does it have any real-life value and how will it influence the relationship between the U.S. and its neighbors? Is the wall project feasible in modern realities? The reasons of illegal immigration When you write an essay about illegal immigration, search your memory for people you know that have left their home countries to live in the U.S. illegally. Why did they do it? What forced them out of their homes? Was it the desire to live a better life or something more sinister like a war or oppression? The stories of real people can help paint the general picture. Maybe if some of the factors causing illegal immigration could be addressed by governments of other countries, the flow of immigration to wealthier countries could be reduced. General recommendations on how to write an essay about illegal immigration As any other paper, this one should follow best practices of the academic writing area: Extensive research of relevant sources In your essay illegal immigration should be studied rather deeply, at least the aspect of it that you are writing about. That’s why you’ll need to spend plenty of time going over the sources. Without it, the paper won’t be comprehensive enough. Luckily, the immigration being a widely discussed issue, you shouldn’t have any problems finding all kinds of information. A well-established, debatable thesis statement In your essay illegal immigration thesis statement should be one that fits all the established criteria. It should be specific enough to allow research in the scope of your paper. It should be broad enough to cover all sides of a certain aspect. It should be debatable and provable. And finally, it should be urgent, i.e. relevant to modern realia. Appropriate structure Any paper that aims for a high grade should be structured according to the rules established by your college or university as well as follow general writing guidelines. Most papers follow the regular 3-part structure, where the thesis statement belongs in the introduction, body paragraphs are intended for arguments, and the conclusion summarizes what has been said. In any case, consult your prompts and relevant writing guides. Appropriate citation and formatting Any paper should follow the established rules of citation. Otherwise, it will qualify as plagiarism. Find out the style you are supposed to follow and then download the latest style guide to make sure all the norms are met. Alternatively, you can use an online citation tool, just make sure it relies on the latest norms.

Preventing Sexual Harassment in the Workplace Essay

The Los Angeles Times recently ran survey results that found that four out of five teenagers suffer sex harassment at school. One in ten students said that he/she had been forced to commit a sexual act during school hours. The surveyors state that the findings provide evidence that sexual harassment in schools has reached â€Å"epidemic† proportions. Employment training programs now ten years after the sexual harassment prohibition and the well-publicized Thomas hearings begin with myths and facts about sexual harassment or pre-tests on knowledge of the prohibitions against the activity. The Mythology Of The Greek Society - 1603 Words

It’s generally agreed upon, from scholars to the average reader, that the ancient Greece society was overwhelmingly patriarchal. For this reason, 4th century B.C had views that were dominantly misogynist. Women were thought to be no more than tools to the men of the Athenian society. To explain, one can look at the archaeology of the Greeks. The towering figure of Dionysos, the God of Wine, hovering over a miniature, and at the same time powerless, women perfectly exemplifies this concept of misogynism. To further the periods misogynistic ideas, the traditional literature had no concept of centering a story around a woman. Yet despite living in this society as described, Greek playwright Euripides was the first voice of protofeminism in†¦show more content†¦Even the chorus doesn’t deny her endeavors, thus arousing some form of pity in the reader. Medea even states that she just prefers death over all else. The argument though is, can there really by pity for a child-killer and a savage whose actions have resulted in countless deaths? No matter the outcome of the play, Euripides writes it so there is a certain level of connection with Medea in the beginning of the play, so the viewer can watch as she releases herself from the male control. This in turn makes the viewer instead go through catharsis, because they related most to the tragic ending of Jason and realized that this could have been prevented if a male treated a woman in a better fashion. Even Bernard Knox, from the Johns Hopkins press, stated that the lines of Medea’s speech is a â€Å"complaint of a woman of great intellectual capacity† who lack the power for change (Knox 314). Euripides takes advantage of this fact to convey that Medea wouldn’t have mindlessly murder her children, he wanted the audience to then think about why the playwright wrote that scene. Only then did they realize it was to sympathize with Medea. Symbolically this scene conveyed women as an individual and not just a women bearer. The horrors are a coverup for Euripides so his views of proto-feminism weren’t deemed too radical. In addition, the work of Euripides

Understanding Alzheimers Disease Essay - 1846 Words

Understanding Alzheimers Disease With all of the advanced technology that the medical field possesses today, there is still suffering that occurs from incurable diseases. Alzheimers Disease is one of those incurable diseases that take the lives of many today. This paper will examine this disease thoroughly by looking at its definition, and discussing general information, facts, and figures. The cause of Alzheimers Disease, and the much thought about question of if it is genetic or not will disputed. Also the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimers Disease will be addressed. Included will also be tips on how to make the life of an Alzheimers patient easier. What is Alzheimers Disease? Alzheimers Disease (AD)†¦show more content†¦Currently there are approximately two to four million Americans that have AD, and due to the fact that the population as a whole will age, by the middle of the 21st century, that number might reach 14 million. Rarely does AD strike people in their 40s or 50s, and when it does it is considered to be a subdivision called early-onset AD. Elderly people age 65 or older is the class most often effected by Alzheimers Disease. Three percent of all people age 65 to 74 have Alzheimers. Nineteen percent of those between the ages of 75 and 84 are affected, and for those over age 85 forty-seven percent are affected. The average cost of caring for someone with Alzheimers Disease is considerable, and is approximately $174,000 per person over the course of the disease. This figure is for those persons who can be cared for at home by a friend or family member. If the condition is bad enough and the persons caregi ver has to seek outside help, such as a nursing home, the cost rises. (Robinson, 1999) By reading all of these startling facts one may wonder what causes such a horrible disease. In the year of 1906, Dr. Alois Alzheimer, the man in which the disease is named after, conducted an autopsy on a woman who died from an unusual mental illness. To What extent was Hitler responsible for the outbreak of WW2 free essay sample

If you asked an average person why World War II happened, they would most likely blame it on Hitler. This accusation would be partly accurate; after all it was the Fuhrer who led the German army into Poland on September 1st 1939, officially beginning the war. But, if you take a closer look, examine the facts; you can see that numerous events lead up to this point (many of which had little to do with Hitler personally). One of the first actions, which in the long run lead to the outbreak of war, was ironically the peace Treaty of Versailles in 1919. The Treaty had many points concerning Germany, which were very harsh (they were forced to pay a huge war fee, demilitarize Rhineland, stop the production of weapons etc. ). The victorious countries thought that this would make Germany weaker, and prevent it from attacking anybody. Unfortunately, quite the opposite happened, the German people were profoundly unpleased with the outcome of World War I. We will write a custom essay sample on To What extent was Hitler responsible for the outbreak of WW2 or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The Treaty caused hatred towards everyone who agreed with it. The Wall Street Crash of 1929, one of the main reasons Hitler gained enough support to become chancellor. Why? Because the crisis spread all the way to Europe, Germany included. Hitler seemed to know a cure for all misfortunes of the Weimar Republic. He offered jobs for the unemployed. Had the Jews and communists to blame for all the calamities, and offered to basically get rid of them. These ideas along with some amazing propaganda made Hitler chancellor in 1933. Now, that he was one of the most influential people in Germany, he could easily determine it’s fate. One of the things that pushed the Fuhrer to invade Poland was the fact that the League of Nations was practically powerless. This was insinuated when Italy invaded Abyssinia (both members of the League), and got away with it. Italy was a powerful country, and all the other members could do to try stopping it was threaten sanction (which wasn’t even an effective threat, because there was plenty of other places from which Italy could get it’s resources). When everyone saw how poorly the strong members had handled this situation, they got the basic idea that the League of Nations was not as effective as it was supposed to be, and that a strong country is likely to get away with breaking some of the rules. Not only did the League seem insubstantial, but so did Great Britain and France. They seemed to have no reaction whatsoever to Hitler repeatedly breaking more and more rules of the Treaty of Versailles. All of the above actions, to some extent lead up to the outbreak of World War II. But to what extent was Hitler responsible? His actions are probably most visible at first glance. He was the man who began the war, after all. But would he have done it if Germany had been treated fairly after World War I, and it’s people were satisfied with the outcome? Would anybody be willing to vote for the Nazi party if there had been no crisis? From what I’ve deduced, Germany would most likely not have sought revenge if it had been fairly treated. Hitler wouldn’t want to gain more land, or make the country more powerful, as it would never have gotten weak. There would never have been any â€Å"November Criminals† to blame. Hitler’s actions, which led up to the outbreak of war, started happening after he had been appointed chancellor (became influential). But if the world depression hadn’t happened, people wouldn’t have had good reasons to vote for his extremist party, as they would most likely have been satisfied with the â€Å"calmer† centralized parties. In conclusion, Hitler was responsible for the outbreak of the Second World War to a certain extent. But the most important causes (which ultimately gave him power) had happened prior to when he was appointed chancellor. Germany didn’t need Hitler in person to begin the war, as it was tilting it that direction ever since 1919. He was just the man who pushed it across the borderline. Maybe the war wouldn’t have happened if Hitler had never become the Fuhrer, but The Weimar Republic would have stayed unsatisfied, and, sooner or later another person would have come along to change that.

Supply Chain Assignment free essay sample

Supply Chain Management transformation is a strategic imperative for any manufacturer. This process is very importance because it sees all suppliers and customers as part of one complex supply chain network and understands that transforming that supply chain into a synchronized chain is the primary goal. This timely supply chain information can pay off handsomely in lower costs, less inventory, improved throughput, shorter cycle times, and the highest levels f customer service. The very essence of supply chain management is effective information and material flow throughout a network of customers and suppliers (Donover, 2010). Getting Ready For Medical School With Shadowing Experience

Getting Ready For Medical School With Shadowing ExperienceWhen applying to medical school, one of the most important factors that one will have to face is the personal statement that they must write for their personal application. Even if you have not yet decided which school you would like to attend, you will still have to submit a personal statement. Many students fail to realize that you should keep in mind that the personal statement is the most important thing that you have to write. For this reason, you should always remember that when preparing the personal statement, you should be honest with yourself and also prepare it as if you were to talk about yourself. For example, if you have graduated from a higher education institution and have gone on to take up a position in a private hospital or a hospital, you can imagine how much better your statement will look. There are several reasons for this.First, you will be able to focus more on the contents of your personal statement tha n you might be able to if you write the same as you would for a writing sample essay. Second, when writing about yourself, you will be able to explain why you deserve to go to medical school. Third, you will be able to compare yourself to other applicants. When you prepare a personal statement for your application, you will need to make certain that the content of your personal statement does not differ much from what you actually say in the sample essay. There are ways of doing this. However, you will need to determine the best way for you to achieve this.As a rule, your personal statement may include other parts, such as personal data, your academic accomplishments, and so on. This is not necessary, but if you really want to do this, then there are certain methods of creating an identical written statement that would apply to both.Although it is very important to consider the shadowing experience when preparing your personal statement, it is not necessary if you have already gone t hrough the process of applying to medical school. In that case, you need to make sure that you have all the information ready before you actually write the personal statement.

Among vs. Amongst

Among vs. Amongst Among vs. Amongst Among vs. Amongst By Ali Hale Summary: Among and amongst are interchangeable terms. Among is more common in modern writing. Americans tend to always use among, while in the UK both among and amongst are used. Although we’ve covered the difference between Among/Amongst in another post on Daily Writing Tips (spoiler alert: there isn’t one), you might still be wondering which word would work best in a particular context. One of our readers, Tania Botha, asked: â€Å"When (if ever) must one use â€Å"amongst† – I systematically use â€Å"among† in my own writing and change it when editing other people’s texts, because â€Å"amongst† seems so old-fashioned. Is there a rule?† If you’re American, you may find that you pretty much never hear â€Å"amongst† – in the UK, where I live, it’s a little more common. (I often heard it in school from teachers instructing us to â€Å"talk amongst yourselves† while they prepared the next bit of the lesson). To answer Tania’s question: there’s no situation where you must use the word â€Å"amongst†, but there are contexts in which it might make sense to use it. If you’re writing a medieval fantasy story, or a piece of historical fiction, â€Å"amongst† could fit well with your tone. For instance: As Tarquin stood amongst the great trees of the ancient forest In the depths of the castle, amongst the detritus of the feast But if you’re writing a news or feature article, or a piece of modern fiction, â€Å"among† is probably a better fit. For instance: â€Å"Australia’s cheap, dirty petrol ranks among the worst of the OECD nations† (The Guardian) â€Å"Six hotels in Llandudno have been named among the best in the UK.† (BBC News) So yes,  amongst  can seem old-fashioned – but it’s still grammatically correct as an alternative to  among. It’s up to you to select which you prefer: if you’re British or Canadian, â€Å"amongst† is unlikely to stand out as especially unusual; if you’re American, it’s almost certainly going to seem oddly old-fashioned unless you’re using it in an appropriate context. Examples of â€Å"Amongst† and â€Å"Among† in Literature In 19th century literature, there are plenty of examples of the use of the word â€Å"amongst† – both from British writers and American writers. Here are a few examples from Jane Eyre, by the English writer Charlotte Bronte. â€Å"Amongst† appears quite frequently: â€Å"I heard a wild wind rushing amongst† â€Å"Flowers peeped out amongst the leaves; snow-drops, crocuses, purple auriculas, and golden-eyed pansies.† â€Å"I lingered till the sun went down amongst the trees, and sank crimson and clear behind them.† But â€Å"among† is also used fairly often: â€Å"She peered at me over her spectacles, and then she opened a drawer and fumbled among its contents for a long time, so long that my hopes began to falter.† â€Å"The company all stared at me as I passed straight among† â€Å"I trode on an edging of turf that the crackle of the pebbly gravel might not betray me: he was standing among the beds at a yard or two distant from where I had to pass; the moth apparently engaged him.† American writers used â€Å"amongst†, too. In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain uses it frequently: â€Å"Pretty soon I heard a twig snap down in the dark amongst the trees- something was a stirring.† â€Å"Tom poked about amongst the passages, and pretty soon ducked under a wall where you wouldn’t a noticed that there was a hole.† â€Å"My heart jumped up amongst my lungs.† Again, you’ll also find â€Å"among† being used (though surprisingly infrequently – there are only two instances of it in the whole novel, compared with 37 of â€Å"amongst): â€Å"I struck for the light, but as soon as he turned the corner I went back and got into my skiff and bailed her out, and then pulled up shore in the easy water about six hundred yards, and tucked myself in among some woodboats; for I couldn’t rest easy till I could see the ferryboat start.† â€Å"Then I slipped down to the ground and crawled in among the trees, and, sure enough, there was Tom Sawyer waiting for me.† Ultimately, then, it’s entirely up to you whether you use â€Å"among† or â€Å"amongst†. If, like Tania, you’re editing someone else’s work, you might want to draw their attention to the fact that both words mean exactly the same thing – but that â€Å"amongst† can sound old-fashioned (particularly to American readers). Otherwise – choose whichever word best suits your context and, perhaps, the rhythm and cadence of your sentence. A multinational corporation (MNC) is a corporation Essays

A multinational corporation (MNC) is a corporation Essays A multinational corporation (MNC) is a corporation Essay A multinational corporation (MNC) is a corporation Essay Introduction Multinational corporations can be viewed from different positions ( ownership, direction, scheme and structural, etc. ) and have several dimensions. There have been statements in the yesteryear over the importance of each position and theoreticians have shared different positions when it comes to specifying a ‘multinational’ corporation. Franklin Root ( 1994 ) tries to set the statements to rest by giving some lucidity to the definition. Harmonizing to his definition, a transnational corporation ( MNC ) is a parent company that engages in foreign production through its affiliates located in several states, exercisings direct control over the policies of its affiliates and implements concern schemes in production, selling, finance and staffing that transcend national boundaries. ( Howard, 1994 ) In simplistic footings, a MNC is a concern which has production and/or distribution operations in at least two states, via subordinates, keeping companies, joint ventures, licenci ng etc. By and large, because of their munificence, transnational corporations play a powerful function in international dealingss and local economic systems. The survey analyzes one such planetary corporation which plays a major function both in the local economic system and the economic system at the planetary phase. Analysis Indian companies are fast emerging as Global participants with their foreign direct investing and acquisition activities holding gained land in the last twosome of old ages. ( Murray, 2005 ) Tata Group of Companies is one such company which has hit the universe phase large clip with its recent high profile acquisitions and ventures. The Group makes its presence felt today in every continent and over 43 states. The survey examines the growing of Tata Group, its abroad operations, geographic presence and its incursion scheme. Company Profile Tata Group of Companies Tata Group is one of India’s oldest and largest concern pudding stones. The concern spreads across 96 runing companies in seven concern sectors: information systems and communications ; technology ; stuffs ; services ; energy ; consumer merchandises ; and chemicals. It employs some 2,46,000 people and jointly has a stockholder base of over two million and market capitilisation of $ 57.6 billion. ( Web 1 ) It is a genuinely planetary corporation which made concern headlines with its winning command for Corus ( the UK based steel company ) . Some of the Group’s subordinates and its operations are analyzed below. Tata Tea Tata Tea was setup in 1964 as a joint venture with UK-based James Finlay and Company to develop valued-added tea. The group, which includes Tata Tea and the UK-based Tetley Group expands 40 states and is the universe s 2nd largest planetary branded tea operation. ( Web 1 ) The three major location where Tata tea subordinates are based are in India, UK and US. Tata tea entered the UK market with a Joint Venture with Allied Lyons ( proprietors of Tetley ) to make Tata Tea in 1993. ( Web 1 ) Subsequently on, in 2000, Tetley was acquired by Tata tea making one of the largest planetary tea trade names. Tetley, on its ain, sells over 60 branded merchandises and is the taking tea trade name in UK and Canada with important market portions in the United States, Australia, Poland and France. Tetley’s growing scheme focuses on custom-making the portfolio of offerings for each state. While Tetley is headquartered in London, Tata Tetley has an export oriented unit at Kochi in Kerala, India . Tata Tea Inc ( based in Florida, US ) is a subordinate of Tata Tea, established to run into specific demands of wellness witting US consumers. The company has its mill operations in Florida which is used to recycle or intermix instant teas brought from India. Tata tea besides has important presence in plantation activity in Sri Lanka through Watawala Plantations. ( Web 1 ) Tata Tea’s international portfolio of activities is steadily turning its presence in the remainder of Europe, throughout the Caribbean and lesser developed markets such as Bangladesh, Pakistan and Russia where Tetley was launched in 2004. The amalgamate worldwide branded tea concern of the Tata Tea Group contributes to around 86 per cent of its amalgamate turnover. ( Web 1 ) Tata Steel Tata Steel signifiers India s largest incorporate private sector steel company. It was late in the intelligence for its coup detat command for Corus ( the UK based Steel maker ) . Tata Steel successfully won thecoup detatcommand and is now the world’s fifth-biggest steel house. Corus itself was a planetary company formed out of the 1999 amalgamation of British Steel and Dutch group Hoogovens and employed 47000 employees. ( Web 2 ) It had a graduated table of 19 million metric tons and a presence in Europe with a important trade name name. Corus is now an unlisted company and is held by one of Tata Steel s subordinates on a 100-per cent footing. Tata Steel’s other major acquisition before Corus was Singapore’s steel house Natsteel. It acquired Natsteel to give itself a bridgehead in seven states, including Australia. Before thecoup detatof Corus and Natsteel, Tata steel was chiefly a place based company and Corus represents its first enlargement outside of Asia. It does hold has subordinates in Sri Lanka ( ajoint venturewith Lanka Special Steel ) . Tata Steel’s typical advantage lies in the efficiency of its operations and inexpensive altogether stuffs which has earned itself a alone ticket of being the lowest cost steel manufacturers in the universe. Tata Consultancy Services Tata Consultancy Services ( TCS ) is one of the taking information engineering companies in the universe holding over 50 planetary bringing Centres. Its clients include seven of the top 10 corporations in the Fortune 500 list of the largest corporations in the United States, corporations such as IBM, GE etc. ( Web 3 ) Through its consulting services, TSC helps clients to optimise their concern processes to guarantee faster and accurate consequences. It besides provides client such as GE proving integrating and proving solutions. Its outsourcing maps allow companies like IBM to concentrate on their nucleus operations. TCS besides offers cognition based outsourcing for clients like Danone ( France ) through which it spouses to do its IT substructure flexible, scalable, and secure, while maximising public presentation. Tata Motors Tata Motors is India s largest car company which began its fabrication with a 15-yearcoaction understandingwith Daimler Benz of Germany. It is a quickly turning company and like other Tata Group of companies pursues growing through amalgamations, joint ventures and acquisitions. In 2004, itacquiredthe Daewoo Commercial Vehicle Company, Korea s second-largest truck shaper, now named Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company. ( Rao, 2003 ) Following Year, Tata Motorsacquired a 21-per cent interestin Hispano Carrocera, a reputed Spanish coach and manager maker, with an option to get the staying interest every bit good. This acquisition has made Tata Motors the universe s fifth-largest medium and heavy commercial vehicle maker. It nowexportsvehicles to Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South and South East Asia and Australia and hasassembly operationsin Malaysia, Bangladesh, Ukraine, Kenya and Russia. Some of its other associates include Tata Cummmins ; a joint venture with US based engine maker Cummins, Telco Construction Equipment Company ; a joint venture with Nipponese based Hitachi Machinery for earthmoving and heavy equipments like Cranes etc. ( Web 3 ) Tata AutoComp Systems ( TACO ) Tata AutoComp System is a genuinely planetary engineering company in the automotive sector offering merchandises and services to vehicle and constituent makers every bit good as end-users of cars. It has built its base through partnerships and joint ventures with planetary constituent and vehicle makers. Its three major countries of concern include fabrication, technology and supply-chain direction. TACO has entered into a joint venture with fabrication companies across the universe which include states like Japan, South Korea, US and Germany. Some of its joint ventures are with Johnson Controls ( US ) , Yazaki Corporation ( Japan ) , CHKK ( Japan ) , Ficosa International ( Spain ) , Nifco Corporation ( Japan ) and Stadco ( UK ) ( Web 1 ) Tata BP Solar Tata BP Solar is ajoint venturebetween Tata Power Company and BP Solar, one of the largest solar companies in the universe. It uses state-of-the-art engineering to offer high-quality, advanced solar solutions that cater to the demands of single clients, big establishments every bit good as full communities. ( Source ) Tata BP solar can besides be termed transnational because it exports its merchandises and systems to a host of states and more than half ( 60 % ) of its gross revenues come from exports with more than 95 per cent of the exports traveling to Europe and America. Tata Group’s other large acquisitions list includes the acquisition of South Korean Automaker Daewoo. Daewoo’s domestic market portion has risen from 26 per cent to 33 per cent after the coup detat. ( Newing, 2005 ) Ratan Tata, the president of Tata Group is a steadfast truster in spread outing globally through acquisitions and joint ventures. He advises other Indian companies to turn organically and through amalgamations and acquisitions because he feels that a broader base equips a house against economic downswings. In line with his thought, the Tata Group’s planetary amalgamations hasn’t stopped. It sees the hotel section as the following large chance for growing and is actively seeking to turn its Tata Hotel Group by amalgamations, acquisitions and joint ventures with major hotel groups. Features of a good transnational company Company’s internationalisation and abroad enlargement affect all facets of the concern. For a MNC to be successful, the first measure is to take the right manner of incursion ( Acquisition, Stakeholder, Joint Venture, Licensing etc ) . How a company enters into understanding with the other company is a strategic determination which can take to a successful relationship. Eg. come ining a Chinese market can be really different to the US because Chinese companies and the authorities has greater control over distribution channels which can act upon the incursion scheme. Government ordinances, once more, can play a large portion in taking the best incursion scheme. Eg. Companies can merely keep up to 5-10 % interest in an Indian retail sector harmonizing to authorities ordinances. But, taking the right incursion scheme is merely the first measure and does non vouch success. Other facets such as concern scheme, Research and Development, production, procurance, gross revenues A ; se lling, trade name A ; rational belongings, direction, human resources, financing As ; accounting, IT direction hold to be considered. Companies could besides be required to alter their organisation construction and the manner work is carried out. Eg. A US based company come ining into a joint venture with a Nipponese house may hold to flatten its organisational construction harmonizing to Nipponese demands. Cultural and societal factors besides come into image, particularly, if the amalgamation is between two companies coming from different parts. Eg. Japan and US. All these facets of the concern has to be clearly understood before make up ones minding on a scheme. Decisions Tata Group of companies has been successful because of its model of communicating and value systems which cater to the demands of different demographic groups around the universe. Its experience in diverse sectors has armed it with the ability to visualise the merchandise from the end-users point of view which is critical to any MNC’s success. ( Skapinker, 2005 ) The Group and its transnational subordinates has helped further the development of domestic intermediate good bring forthing houses and has had a positive impact on the development of domestic fabrication houses and later on the Indian economic system. Through its Tata Consultancy, Tata Motors and now Tata Steel trade name, it has shown the manner to other Indian companies who have ever shied away from amalgamations and acquisitions. Taking a cue from Tata Group, other Indian companies have began spread outing their concern overseas. Tata Group have besides contributed to bettering the fabricating state of affairs in India and across the universe through good fabrication patterns. Another ground for its success is its control of abroad subordinates which is much stronger than that of Western companies. The group as a whole is cohesive and integrated which allows it to meet on ends. Ratan Tata ( 2006 ) sums up his Group’s success by saying that the group had allowed the companies that were taken over to retain the face, touch and experience of a local company while still pull offing to incorporate merchandise programs and schemes. Mentions Most of the company specific information was taken from Tata Group’s web site and Company Reports Books and Diaries Howard V. Psychological pressure Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Psychological pressure - Essay Example In case the pressure has grown or has an everlasting effect, it may cause psychological illness or long term chronic diseases. Pressure can be as a result of both daily responsibilities and routine events, or it can as well be caused by unusual events such as illness or trauma of oneself or family member. Human body highly respond to psychological pressure by releasing stress hormones (such as epinephrine) which in turn increases blood pressure, increases speed heart rate, and raises blood sugar level (Dambacher and HÃ ¼bner, 13). In order to perceive threats a person acts on the changes with greater strength and speed. It is therefore essential to learn how to deal and handle those pressures. However, a person has to clearly understand the causes of psychological pressure. This is to aid reduce the negative impact of pressure in people’s lives enabling them to live a more healthy lives. By meeting live threatening events, people have the kind of oppressive feeling of psychological pressure which at times is represented by cognitive, emotion and behavioral responses. Psychological pressure has shown can cause stress and research has indicated that people who have suffered long term effect of stress can develop digestive problems, fertility problems, urinary complications, and a low immune system. The impact is large such that they are also more prone to viral infections such has flu or common cold and headaches, sleep disorders, depression and also anxiety. Psychological pressure can be caused by social or cultural factors and shifts; it can as well be as a result of psychological changes or physiological shifts, including required socialization changes. It can be as a result of traumatic experience that happened suddenly or some chronic tension. Situations such as unfavorable working conditions, financial breakdowns, death of family members or a friend, divorce or separation of spouse, are always greater contribution of psychological

Principles of Managing Operations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Principles of Managing Operations - Essay Example Galloway defines 'Operations Management' as 'all activities concerned with the deliberate transformation of materials, information or customers' Elaborating his definition he states that 'Operations Management' is "concerned with both the effective and efficient management of any operation." (1998 1-2) Johnston et al define 'Operations Management' as "concerned with the design, planning, control and improvement of an organization's resources and processes to produce goods or services for customers." Thus key management tasks in operations management are designing, planning, controlling, improvement of activities; transforming input resources into goods or services (input-transformation-output); understanding the organisation's strategic intentions and translating them into operations and performance objectives which in turn guide operations decisions about design, planning, control and improvement of operations resources and processes. (1997 15-25) Supermarkets are self-service food stores stocking and selling a variety of goods including groceries, foods, medicines, clothes, alcohol (where permitted) and other household goods. Supermarkets may offer some goods produced by them but more generally they retail products of many manufacturers. They are often chains of stores supplied by the distribution centres of large businesses. Today they offer home deliveries, online transactions, extend their services to credit cards and other financial products (e.g. Tesco in the UK). They operate on the principles of 'economies of scale' because of which they are able to offer products cheap and convenience because they offer a variety of goods and services in one location. While these features are common to all supermarkets, the creativity with which a supermarket market markets its products (or services), establishes its brand equity and ultimately the quality of services it offers lend it the winning edge. 1. Product Design: As we have seen earlier the brand differentiator in the case of supermarkets is their quality of service to customers. In the case of manufactured goods the customer is not involved in the transformation process and the finished product is stocked prior to supply. On the other hand, American Marketing Association defines a "service" as "Activities, benefits or satisfactions, which are offered for sale or provided in connection with sale of goods." (Galloway 1998 1-2) Customer satisfaction in the context of supermarkets is obtained by locating them in their vicinity or offering free home delivery, offering large varieties to suit customer tastes and delight, the ease with which a customer can find or is helped to find his/her requirements, the efficiency with which the customer is serviced, pricing vis--vis competitors and of course underwriting quality of the products sold. It is difficult to define which of these issues appeals to individual customers but to be in business a supermarket has to strike a balance among them. A customer who is not able to find (for e.g.) sugar in a supermarket, a customer who can not find his favourite brand of coffee because the supermarket does not stock it, a customer who does not find a ready attendant to

Fluids In Rigid Body Motion Engineering Essay

Fluids In Rigid Body Motion Engineering Essay 11-38C A moving body of fluid can be treated as a rigid body when there are no shear stresses (i.e., no motion between fluid layers relative to each other) in the fluid body. 11-39C A glass of water is considered. The water pressure at the bottom surface will be the same since the acceleration for all four cases is zero. 11-40C The pressure at the bottom surface is constant when the glass is stationary. For a glass moving on a horizontal plane with constant acceleration, water will collect at the back but the water depth will remain constant at the center. Therefore, the pressure at the midpoint will be the same for both glasses. But the bottom pressure will be low at the front relative to the stationary glass, and high at the back (again relative to the stationary glass). Note that the pressure in all cases is the hydrostatic pressure, which is directly proportional to the fluid height. 11-41C When a vertical cylindrical container partially filled with water is rotated about its axis and rigid body motion is established, the fluid level will drop at the center and rise towards the edges. Noting that hydrostatic pressure is proportional to fluid depth, the pressure at the mid point will drop and the pressure at the edges of the bottom surface will rise due to rotation. 11-42 A water tank is being towed by a truck on a level road, and the angle the free surface makes with the horizontal is measured. The acceleration of the truck is to be determined. ax  Ã‚ ± = 15 ° Water tank Assumptions 1 The road is horizontal so that acceleration has no vertical component (az = 0). 2 Effects of splashing, breaking, driving over bumps, and climbing hills are assumed to be secondary, and are not considered. 3 The acceleration remains constant. Analysis We take the x-axis to be the direction of motion, the z-axis to be the upward vertical direction. The tangent of the angle the free surface makes with the horizontal is Solving for ax and substituting, Discussion Note that the analysis is valid for any fluid with constant density since we used no information that pertains to fluid properties in the solution. 11-43 Two water tanks filled with water, one stationary and the other moving upwards at constant acceleration. The tank with the higher pressure at the bottom is to be determined. Tank A 8 m Water az = 5 m/s2 Tank B 2 m Water g z 0  · 2  · 1  · 2  · 1 Assumptions 1 The acceleration remains constant. 2 Water is an incompressible substance. Properties We take the density of water to be 1000 kg/m3. Analysis The pressure difference between two points 1 and 2 in an incompressible fluid is given by or since ax = 0. Taking point 2 at the free surface and point 1 at the tank bottom, we have and and thus Tank A: We have az = 0, and thus the pressure at the bottom is Tank B: We have az = +5 m/s2, and thus the pressure at the bottom is Therefore, tank A has a higher pressure at the bottom. Discussion We can also solve this problem quickly by examining the relation . Acceleration for tank B is about 1.5 times that of Tank A (14.81 vs 9.81 m/s2), but the fluid depth for tank A is 4 times that of tank B (8 m vs 2 m). Therefore, the tank with the larger acceleration-fluid height product (tank A in this case) will have a higher pressure at the bottom. 11-44 A water tank is being towed on an uphill road at constant acceleration. The angle the free surface of water makes with the horizontal is to be determined, and the solution is to be repeated for the downhill motion case. z x az ax  Ã‚ ¡ = 20 ° - Ã‚ ± Downhill motion Uphill motion z x ax Free surface az Water tank  Ã‚ ¡ = 20 °  Ã‚ ± Horizontal Assumptions 1 Effects of splashing, breaking, driving over bumps, and climbing hills are assumed to be secondary, and are not considered. 2 The acceleration remains constant. Analysis We take the x- and z-axes as shown in the figure. From geometrical considerations, the horizontal and vertical components of acceleration are The tangent of the angle the free surface makes with the horizontal is  ®  Ã‚ ± = 22.2 ° When the direction of motion is reversed, both ax and az are in negative x- and z-direction, respectively, and thus become negative quantities, Then the tangent of the angle the free surface makes with the horizontal becomes  ®  Ã‚ ± = 30.1 ° Discussion Note that the analysis is valid for any fluid with constant density, not just water, since we used no information that pertains to water in the solution. 11-45E A vertical cylindrical tank open to the atmosphere is rotated about the centerline. The angular velocity at which the bottom of the tank will first be exposed, and the maximum water height at this moment are to be determined.  Ã‚ · 2 ft z r 0 Assumptions 1 The increase in the rotational speed is very slow so that the liquid in the container always acts as a rigid body. 2 Water is an incompressible fluid. Analysis Taking the center of the bottom surface of the rotating vertical cylinder as the origin (r = 0, z = 0), the equation for the free surface of the liquid is given as where h0 = 1 ft is the original height of the liquid before rotation. Just before dry spot appear at the center of bottom surface, the height of the liquid at the center equals zero, and thus zs(0) = 0. Solving the equation above for  Ã‚ · and substituting, Noting that one complete revolution corresponds to 2 Ã‚ ° radians, the rotational speed of the container can also be expressed in terms of revolutions per minute (rpm) as Therefore, the rotational speed of this container should be limited to 108 rpm to avoid any dry spots at the bottom surface of the tank. The maximum vertical height of the liquid occurs a the edges of the tank (r = R = 1 ft), and it is Discussion Note that the analysis is valid for any liquid since the result is independent of density or any other fluid property. 11-46 A cylindrical tank is being transported on a level road at constant acceleration. The allowable water height to avoid spill of water during acceleration is to be determined D=40 cm ax = 4 m/s2  Ã‚ ± htank =60 cm  Ã¢â‚¬Å¾z Water tank Assumptions 1 The road is horizontal during acceleration so that acceleration has no vertical component (az = 0). 2 Effects of splashing, breaking, driving over bumps, and climbing hills are assumed to be secondary, and are not considered. 3 The acceleration remains constant. Analysis We take the x-axis to be the direction of motion, the z-axis to be the upward vertical direction, and the origin to be the midpoint of the tank bottom. The tangent of the angle the free surface makes with the horizontal is (and thus  Ã‚ ± = 22.2 °) The maximum vertical rise of the free surface occurs at the back of the tank, and the vertical midplane experiences no rise or drop during acceleration. Then the maximum vertical rise at the back of the tank relative to the midplane is Therefore, the maximum initial water height in the tank to avoid spilling is Discussion Note that the analysis is valid for any fluid with constant density, not just water, since we used no information that pertains to water in the solution. 11-47 A vertical cylindrical container partially filled with a liquid is rotated at constant speed. The drop in the liquid level at the center of the cylinder is to be determined. z r  Ã‚ · zs R = 20 cm Free surface ho = 60 cm g Assumptions 1 The increase in the rotational speed is very slow so that the liquid in the container always acts as a rigid body. 2 The bottom surface of the container remains covered with liquid during rotation (no dry spots). Analysis Taking the center of the bottom surface of the rotating vertical cylinder as the origin (r = 0, z = 0), the equation for the free surface of the liquid is given as where h0 = 0.6 m is the original height of the liquid before rotation, and Then the vertical height of the liquid at the center of the container where r = 0 becomes Therefore, the drop in the liquid level at the center of the cylinder is Discussion Note that the analysis is valid for any liquid since the result is independent of density or any other fluid property. Also, our assumption of no dry spots is validated since z0(0) is positive. 11-48 The motion of a fish tank in the cabin of an elevator is considered. The pressure at the bottom of the tank when the elevator is stationary, moving up with a specified acceleration, and moving down with a specified acceleration is to be determined. Fish Tank  · 2 az = 3 m/s2 h = 40 cm g z Water  · 1 0 Assumptions 1 The acceleration remains constant. 2 Water is an incompressible substance. Properties We take the density of water to be 1000 kg/m3. Analysis The pressure difference between two points 1 and 2 in an incompressible fluid is given by or since ax = 0. Taking point 2 at the free surface and point 1 at the tank bottom, we have and and thus (a) Tank stationary: We have az = 0, and thus the gage pressure at the tank bottom is (b) Tank moving up: We have az = +3 m/s2, and thus the gage pressure at the tank bottom is (c) Tank moving down: We have az = -3 m/s2, and thus the gage pressure at the tank bottom is Discussion Note that the pressure at the tank bottom while moving up in an elevator is almost twice that while moving down, and thus the tank is under much greater stress during upward acceleration. 11-49 vertical cylindrical milk tank is rotated at constant speed, and the pressure at the center of the bottom surface is measured. The pressure at the edge of the bottom surface is to be determined. z r  Ã‚ · zs R = 1.50 m Free surface g 0 ho Assumptions 1 The increase in the rotational speed is very slow so that the liquid in the container always acts as a rigid body. 2 Milk is an incompressible substance. Properties The density of the milk is given to be 1030 kg/m3. Analysis Taking the center of the bottom surface of the rotating vertical cylinder as the origin (r = 0, z = 0), the equation for the free surface of the liquid is given as where R = 1.5 m is the radius, and The fluid rise at the edge relative to the center of the tank is The pressure difference corresponding to this fluid height difference is Then the pressure at the edge of the bottom surface becomes Discussion Note that the pressure is 14% higher at the edge relative to the center of the tank, and there is a fluid level difference of nearly 2 m between the edge and center of the tank, and these large differences should be considered when designing rotating fluid tanks. 11-50 Milk is transported in a completely filled horizontal cylindrical tank accelerating at a specified rate. The maximum pressure difference in the tanker is to be determined. Æ’-EES ax = 3 m/s2  · 1 z x 0 g  · 2 Assumptions 1 The acceleration remains constant. 2 Milk is an incompressible substance. Properties The density of the milk is given to be 1020 kg/m3. Analysis We take the x- and z- axes as shown. The horizontal acceleration is in the negative x direction, and thus ax is negative. Also, there is no acceleration in the vertical direction, and thus az = 0. The pressure difference between two points 1 and 2 in an incompressible fluid in linear rigid body motion is given by  ® The first term is due to acceleration in the horizontal direction and the resulting compression effect towards the back of the tanker, while the second term is simply the hydrostatic pressure that increases with depth. Therefore, we reason that the lowest pressure in the tank will occur at point 1 (upper front corner), and the higher pressure at point 2 (the lower rear corner). Therefore, the maximum pressure difference in the tank is since x1 = 0, x2 = 7 m, z1 = 3 m, and z2 = 0. Discussion Note that the variation of pressure along a horizontal line is due to acceleration in the horizontal direction while the variation of pressure in the vertical direction is due to the effects of gravity and acceleration in the vertical direction (which is zero in this case). 11-51 Milk is transported in a completely filled horizontal cylindrical tank decelerating at a specified rate. The maximum pressure difference in the tanker is to be determined. Æ’-EES z x  · 2  · 1 g ax = 3 m/s2 Assumptions 1 The acceleration remains constant. 2 Milk is an incompressible substance. Properties The density of the milk is given to be 1020 kg/m3. Analysis We take the x- and z- axes as shown. The horizontal deceleration is in the x direction, and thus ax is positive. Also, there is no acceleration in the vertical direction, and thus az = 0. The pressure difference between two points 1 and 2 in an incompressible fluid in linear rigid body motion is given by  ® The first term is due to deceleration in the horizontal direction and the resulting compression effect towards the front of the tanker, while the second term is simply the hydrostatic pressure that increases with depth. Therefore, we reason that the lowest pressure in the tank will occur at point 1 (upper front corner), and the higher pressure at point 2 (the lower rear corner). Therefore, the maximum pressure difference in the tank is since x1 = 7 m, x2 = 0, z1 = 3 m, and z2 = 0. Discussion Note that the variation of pressure along a horizontal line is due to acceleration in the horizontal direction while the variation of pressure in the vertical direction is due to the effects of gravity and acceleration in the vertical direction (which is zero in this case). 11-52 A vertical U-tube partially filled with alcohol is rotated at a specified rate about one of its arms. The elevation difference between the fluid levels in the two arms is to be determined. z r 0 h0 = 20 cm R = 25 cm Assumptions 1 Alcohol is an incompressible fluid. Analysis Taking the base of the left arm of the U-tube as the origin (r = 0, z = 0), the equation for the free surface of the liquid is given as where h0 = 0.20 m is the original height of the liquid before rotation, and  Ã‚ · = 4.2 rad/s. The fluid rise at the right arm relative to the fluid level in the left arm (the center of rotation) is Discussion Note that the analysis is valid for any liquid since the result is independent of density or any other fluid property. 11-53 A vertical cylindrical tank is completely filled with gasoline, and the tank is rotated about its vertical axis at a specified rate. The pressures difference between the centers of the bottom and top surfaces, and the pressures difference between the center and the edge of the bottom surface are to be determined. Æ’-EES h = 3 m D = 1.20 m z r 0 Assumptions 1 The increase in the rotational speed is very slow so that the liquid in the container always acts as a rigid body. 2 Gasoline is an incompressible substance. Properties The density of the gasoline is given to be 740 kg/m3. Analysis The pressure difference between two points 1 and 2 in an incompressible fluid rotating in rigid body motion is given by where R = 0.60 m is the radius, and (a) Taking points 1 and 2 to be the centers of the bottom and top surfaces, respectively, we have and . Then, (b) Taking points 1 and 2 to be the center and edge of the bottom surface, respectively, we have , , and . Then, Discussion Note that the rotation of the tank does not affect the pressure difference along the axis of the tank. But the pressure difference between the edge and the center of the bottom surface (or any other horizontal plane) is due entirely to the rotation of the tank. 11-54 Problem 11-53 is reconsidered. The effect of rotational speed on the pressure difference between the center and the edge of the bottom surface of the cylinder as the rotational speed varies from 0 to 500 rpm in increments of 50 rpm is to be investigated. g=9.81 m/s2 rho=740 kg/m3 R=0.6 m h=3 m omega=2*pi*n_dot/60 rad/s DeltaP_axis=rho*g*h/1000 kPa DeltaP_bottom=rho*omega^2*R^2/2000 kPa Rotation rate , rpm Angular speed  Ã‚ ·, rad/s  Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Pcenter-edge kPa 0 50 100 150 200 250 300 350 400 450 500 0.0 5.2 10.5 15.7 20.9 26.2 31.4 36.7 41.9 47.1 52.4 0.0 3.7 14.6 32.9 58.4 91.3 131.5 178.9 233.7 295.8 365.2 11-55E A water tank partially filled with water is being towed by a truck on a level road. The pressure difference between the front and back ends of the tank along a horizontal line when the truck accelerates and decelerates at specified rates. Æ’-EES ax = 3 m/s2 z x 0 1  · 2 g  · Assumptions 1 The acceleration remains constant. 2 Water is an incompressible substance. Properties We take the density of the water to be 1000 kg/m3. Analysis (a) We take the x- and z- axes as shown. The horizontal acceleration is in the negative x direction, and thus ax is negative. Also, there is no acceleration in the vertical direction, and thus az = 0. The pressure difference between two points 1 and 2 in an incompressible fluid in linear rigid body motion is given by  ® since z2 z1 = 0 along a horizontal line. Therefore, the pressure difference between the front and back of the tank is due to acceleration in the horizontal direction and the resulting compression effect towards the back of the tank. Then the pressure difference along a horizontal line becomes since x1 = 0 and x2 = 7 m. (b) The pressure difference during deceleration is determined the way, but ax = 4 m/s2 in this case, Discussion Note that the pressure is higher at the back end of the tank during acceleration, but at the front end during deceleration (during breaking, for example) as expected. Review Problems 11-58 The density of a wood log is to be measured by tying lead weights to it until both the log and the weights are completely submerged, and then weighing them separately in air. The average density of a given log is to be determined by this approach. Properties The density of lead weights is given to be 11,300 kg/m3. We take the density of water to be 1000 kg/m3. Analysis The weight of a body is equal to the buoyant force when the body is floating in a fluid while being completely submerged in it (a consequence of vertical force balance from static equilibrium). In this case the average density of the body must be equal to the density of the fluid since Lead, 34 kg Log, 1540 N FB Water Therefore, where Substituting, the volume and density of the log are determined to be Discussion Note that the log must be completely submerged for this analysis to be valid. Ideally, the lead weights must also be completely submerged, but this is not very critical because of the small volume of the lead weights. 11-59 A rectangular gate that leans against the floor with an angle of 45 ° with the horizontal is to be opened from its lower edge by applying a normal force at its center.
